A practical 720p to 1080p upscaling guide

Turn a compatible 720p clip into 1080p while preserving aspect ratio, timing and audio.

Start with the cleanest source

Use the original export whenever possible. A file downloaded from a messaging service may already have lost texture and picked up block artifacts. Upscaling those blocks can make them more visible. Keep your original file and work on a short excerpt first. The browser version accepts 8-bit SDR video within its size and duration limits.

Choose 1080p rather than automatically doubling

For a 1280 × 720 landscape source, the 1080p preset exports 1920 × 1080. A 720 × 1280 portrait source becomes 1080 × 1920. The label refers to the short edge, which keeps the framing intact. The 2× preset instead gives 2560 × 1440 from the landscape source. Neither option crops the picture. Dimensions may be rounded to even pixels for encoder compatibility.

Select the content type that best describes most frames, generate a preview, and move the comparison slider with the mouse or arrow keys. Begin with Fast for long clips; try Balanced on a short sample if edges still look soft. The larger network is not automatically more natural on every scene.

Check the delivered image at its intended size

View the exported file at normal playback size and also inspect a few frames at 100%. Avoid judging two differently sized player windows. Listen at the beginning and end, look for edge halos during motion, and compare fine patterns for shimmer. Upload only after this check. A higher resolution label cannot guarantee that a platform will preserve the same appearance after recompression.
